Day 2
Kuala Lumpur

COUNTRYSIDE & BATU CAVES TOUR AND KUALA SELANGOR & FIREFLIES RIVER CRUISE (B, D)

After breakfast drive to the outskirts of the city and along the “Ambassador Row”, Istana Sharif Ali and through Malay villages. The first stop, the Royal Selangor Pewter, is the largest and most modern pewter factory in the world. It is renowned for its high quality products and exceptional craftsmanship. On the factory tour learn about the different processes, such as casting, hammering and engraving etc. of pewter products. Continue with a visit to a Batik factory where the whole designing and printing procedure can be watched. Last stop in the morning are the Batu Caves at the limestone hills. A flight of 272 steps leads up to the sacred Hindu temple cave where the shrine of Hindu deity, Lord Murugah, lies. Another cave, called the museum cave, is filled with images of deities and murals depicting scenes from the Hindu scriptures. After that, stop for lunch at a local restaurant (not included). At around 3.00 p.m., proceed to the quiet hamlet of Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor with one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. On arrival visit Kota Melawati, formerly known as Fort Altingsburg, a Royal Mausoleum, old Fort and the legendary 100 steps (a fabled execution block). The Kuala Selangor Nature Park at the foot of Bukit Melawati is an ideal place for watching birds of passage. With a bit of luck, spot the Silvered-leaf monkeys as well as rare species of birds, butterflies etc. At dusk enjoy an opulent seafood dinner at a fishing village. After dinner take a short drive to Kampung Kuantan to board a typical Malay wooden rowing boat. The skilled oarsmen row upstream into the darkness of the quiet night to witness one of nature's beautiful phenomena. As soon as the eyes adjust to the dark, rows of “flashing” trees become visible along the river bank. What looks like the lights of hundreds of Christmas trees are thousands of fireflies amidst the mangrove trees - a truly magical sight.
